About Kumu Mele
Kumu Mele Kahalepuna Chun is a third-generation featherwork (hulu) artist, proudly continuing the legacy of her grandmother, the late Aunty Mary Lou Kekuewa, and her mother, Aunty Paulette Kahalepuna—both renowned practitioners of the Hawaiian feather arts. Together, they established Nā Lima Mili Hulu Noʻeau in 1991, a Kapahulu-based school and shop dedicated to teaching and preserving this traditional art form.
Mele created her first lei hulu at the age of five under the loving guidance of her tutu. Though she grew up immersed in the world of hulu, often assisting and teaching alongside her Tutu and Mama, it wasn’t until her mother’s passing in 2014 that she truly embraced her kuleana to carry the torch. Since then, Mele has traveled across Hawaiʻi and beyond, sharing her knowledge and passion with students of all ages and backgrounds.
Mele’s teaching is deeply rooted in ʻohana and cultural continuity. Her work honors the generations before her while inspiring a new wave of artists. She believes hulu is not only an art form but a pathway to identity, connection, and pride. Her presence at 4 Days of Aloha is especially meaningful, as both her grandmother and mother taught at the event in years past—making her return a powerful continuation of this treasured legacy.
