Kumu Hula Leialoha Lim Amina is a revered hula teacher, cultural practitioner, researcher, and mentor whose dedication to hula spans decades. She is the Kumu Hula of the award-winning and world-renowned Nā Lei O Kaholokū, a hālau hula she co-founded in 1981 on Oʻahu. With a deep-rooted lineage of hula and an unwavering commitment to Hawaiian culture, Leialoha has left an indelible mark on the hula world as a respected judge, competition trainer, performer, composer, and workshop presenter.
Born and raised in Kohala, Hawaiʻi, Leialoha’s hula journey began with her first kumu hula—her mother, Mary Ann Lim. She continued her studies under esteemed teachers such as Aunt Margaret Tablit, Iolani Luahine, George Naʻope, Edith Kanakaʻole, Darrell Lupenui, and George Holokai, each shaping her understanding of hula’s depth and power.
A pivotal moment in Leialoha’s life was her mentorship under the esteemed Hawaiian philosopher Pilahi Paki, who gifted her the name “Leialoha” and entrusted her with sharing the meaning of the Aloha Chant through hula. It was under Pilahi’s guidance that Nā Lei O Kaholokū was founded and made its debut at the 1982 Merrie Monarch Festival, where it quickly established itself as a force in the hula community.
For over four decades, Leialoha has remained at the forefront of hula education, training not only dancers but also the next generation of hula teachers. She is a sought-after judge for prestigious hula competitions and continues to compete and present workshops worldwide. A passionate researcher of Hawaiian history and mele, she ensures that hula remains rooted in tradition while embracing innovation. Her work as a composer, singer, and musician further enriches the cultural narratives she shares through hula.
Kumu Hula Leialoha Lim Amina’s life mission is to perpetuate the Spirit of Hawaiʻi—Aloha—through her teachings, performances, and mentorship. Her contributions continue to inspire generations of dancers and cultural practitioners, reinforcing hula’s role as a vessel for Hawaiian knowledge, history, and connection.
